Calverton - Longue Jumelles Twinning Visit 2008

Our French friends arrived at 6pm on Wednesday 30th April to a reception at Patching's Farm. We had a glass of wine and listened to speech from Alistair our chairman welcoming our friends and congratulating French members Roger and Monique on their recent marriage in Longue. Jean-Noel, Longue's chairman gave a speech and offered all the English hosts a present.  The ladies were given a Lilly of the Valley plant as it signifies friendship and the men were given a bottle rose wine from the Loire area.

On Thursday morning we were met by our guides at Wollaton Hall for a tour of the Hall and museums.  We climbed the spiral staircase to see the newly renovated Prospect Room and then continued along the roof path to steps that led down to the renovated Tudor kitchens and caves.  The French visitors found the Admiral's bath hidden in the caves very interesting.  We left the Hall at noon to have a buffet lunch at The Willoughby Inn and returned at 2pm for a tour of the Industrial Museum.  The Nottingham Arkwright Society volunteers were on hand to show us around the steam engines and had fired up the Basford Beam Engine housed in the museum.  We went back into the Hall for a look around the natural history museum and especially to see George the famous gorilla.

On Friday morning the group visited Papplewick Pumping Station for a tour of the station and the beautiful gardens.  So members had a ride on a miniature train and then we went on to The Nags Head at Woodborough for lunch.  We met up again at 7pm at Oakmere Park Golf club for a dinner dance.  A superb meal was served in the newly opened function room at the golf course and dancing took place until midnight in the conservatory as we were entertained by Stripes duo.
Saturday was free to spend with hosts and many took this opportunity to shop in Nottingham for souvenirs to take home.

On Saturday evening we met for a game of alley skittles at The Royal Oak in East Bridgford and introduced the French to mushy peas and mint sauce as well as a buffet supper.  The french were all educated in the term 'jammy sod' during the games due to several good bowls.  The evening passed quickly and it didn't seem long before we took them to the bus at 1am to depart for their journey back to Longue.
